Prematurity and Infants Physiotherapy

We are experienced in supporting babies, especially those born prematurely, to develop their skills in their first years. We can provide monitoring and targeted interventions to set up your little one for success towards achieving their milestones.

How do we support infants?

We provide targeted intervention to support infants who were born pre-term or those with delays to meet their developmental milestones. Infants born prematurely are at a higher risk of delays and neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. Research shows that earlier support and intervention can reduce the impact of their prematurity on their development and give them the best start to life. Physiotherapy can undertake screening and standardised assessments including the Hammersmith Neurological Evaluation (HINE) and the Albert Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) to understand their level of delay, their neurological function and their risk of long term concerns.

Infants can get a number of conditions which affect their musculo-skeletal system and impact their development. These can include “floppy” or low tone babies, plagiocephaly (flattened head shape), torticollis (tight neck), positional talipes (foot deformities) and limb abnormalities. At Explore Kids Physiotherapy, we can assess and treat these conditions and provide recommendations for further investigations if required.

Our approach

  • Play-based interventions
We believe that babies and children grow through exploration and play. Our physiotherapists use play-based interventions to make therapy enjoyable and effective. Our support is designed to enrich your baby’s play routines and provide families with the tools to make progress effortlessly.
  • Thorough screening and assessments
We provide comprehensive assessments to understand how your baby moves, their posture and their function. We use high quality assessment tools and measures to show where your baby is at with their developmental milestones and any concerns which you have. We communicate to you what we see throughout the assessment and can provide written recommendations or letters when necessary to support your child’s journey.
  • Home based support
Infants learn best when they are relaxed and comfortable. We come to your home to support your little one within safe environments using their preferred toys. We demonstrate using your own objects how to influence and create an environment which fosters your child’s potential, leading to immediate results.
