Paediatric Continence Assessments

We provide high quality continence and toileting assessments. We aim for your child to access the appropriate continence supports and have a healthy bladder and bowel system. We create individualised toilet training programs suited to the needs of your child, and build your capacity to make it a positive and successful routine in your home.

What is a continence assessment?

A paediatric continence assessment is a thorough evaluation of your child’s bladder, bowel and toileting functions. This is to understand the cause behind any relevant concerns, and develop a solid therapy plan to support your child to achieve optimal bladder and bowel health.

Our continence assessments involve an in-depth discussion and history taking with you and your child, exploring all aspects of their body function and toileting habits. We use a few assessment measures to gain a clear picture of the concerns and observational assessments of the environment and toileting routine. Our assessments may also include a physical assessment of their tummy, strength and sensation. Our continence assessments and treatments are non-invasive and we don’t do internal exams.

Continence Confidence

Who may need a continence assessment?

Continence assessments cover a broad range of different issues and conditions which affect the bladder and bowel function in a child. A child may require a continence support for:

  • Delayed independent toileting due to a disability or health condition
  • Constipation, straining, with-holding and/or pain with bowel movements
  • Day time incontinence (regular accidents)
  • Bed wetting (night time incontinence)
  • Early childhood toilet training programs and support
  • Accessing continence products through NDIS funding

Benefits of our service

  • Quality assessments
Our continence assessments are thorough and you will come away with a clear understanding on your child’s situation and how we can support. We can also provide an assessment report or summary if required.
  • Qualified physiotherapist support
Physiotherapists have a unique perspective on toilet training and the bladder/bowel system. Our expertise in the muscular system, including breathing and core control, alongside our practical skills toolbox, leads to effective results.
  • Within your child’s environments
Success starts in the home environment. Observing and implementing interventions in your own home ensures your child is most comfortable, and enables you to carry over the therapy strategies into daily life.
